Congratulations to our Lion’s Den Social Innovation Challenge Winners from 2015!
Thank you to all of the top 12 finalists from 2015 who advanced to Part 2 of the Lion’s Den Social Innovation Challenge and everyone who helped make this event a success!

This year, the Soul of the Next Economy Forum is partnering with Social Innovation Challenge 2015 to bring you the first ever Lion’s Den Social Innovation Challenge.

The Lion’s Den Social Innovation Challenge is a unique opportunity that brings together change makers, mentors, and funders – all focused on bettering society. Now is the time to share your idea, develop your concept, discover new partners and compete for prizes and start-up funding!

Part One – The Lion’s Den Pitch @ the Forum

Now – Register for the Forum and enter to be a part of the Lion’s Den here. Once accepted, you will receive resources to help you develop your pitch and additional instructions. Enter early as only 40 entries will be accepted. Entry deadline (if not filled prior) is Wednesday, September 23.  

Before the Forum – Develop a 90 second pitch promoting your social innovation idea.

At the Forum – Check out the complete Forum schedule for September 25 & 26 here and learn more about the speakers and special events here. We invite you to attend all of the Forum events and take advantage of the Pitching Pit which will be open to you at various points during the Forum.

Lion’s Den Social Innovation Challenge – Saturday, September 26 @ 1:30. Deliver your 90 second pitch to your peers, mentors and panel members. Enjoy the pitches of your fellow change makers. The top 8-10 finalists will be chosen based on People’s Choice and panel input.

Finalists – You will each receive $300, further business training and direct coaching from your own personal business guru to take you to the next step! The finalists move onto Part Two – the ultimate Social Innovation Challenge. 

All participants will be invited to future networking events hosted by Thrive Calgary and have access to the Social Enterprise Webinar Series provided by Small Business Solver

Part Two – The Ultimate Social Innovation Challenge

Following the Forum – Meet with your business guru over the next three weeks and develop your proposal. Access the Social Enterprise Mastermind Series and other resources.

Thursday, October 15 – Submit your final PPT and any other documentation that you wish to provide the panelists. 

image001Saturday, October 17 – 1-4pm – Meet the panelists & funders and then present your proposals.  Each finalist will have 3 minutes to present and 5 minutes for Q&A. Panelists and funders will meet and the winners will be announced followed by a reception. NOTE – this will take place at Ambrose University (150 Ambrose Circle SW) in the Airhart theatre and is open to the public! 

Calgary CBC reporter Kyle Bakx will be the Master of Ceremonies for this exciting event.

Winners – 1st, 2nd & 3rd place each receive $2,000 in business coaching from Encogito and a Datawind tablet! 1st place also receives $2,000 cash, $2,000 in website services from XOD Media Group, $1,200 in legal support from Clausehound and tuition for a Harvard class from Encogito! 2nd place also receives $1,500 cash. 3rd place also receives $1,000 cash. The People’s Choice winner also receives $500 cash (and $2,000 in business coaching if not in the top 3)!

Funding – $22,000 in funding is available for successful proposal(s) from a Calgary entrepreneur. Additional funding may be available through our panelists & funders group which includes St. Andrews United Church, United Church of Canada Foundation, Calgary Foundation, Trico Charitable Foundation and Futupreneur Canada. Those finalists offered funding will negotiate this directly with the funder(s) in terms of loan or equity structure and all other details.

So, what does a successful social innovation idea look like?

Presentations will be evaluated based on the four assessment pillars used in the Social Opportunity Assessment tool:

  • What is the social value potential?
    • Innovation, social need, alignment
  • What is the market potential?
    • Market fit, market size, timing
  • What is the sustainability potential?
    • Revenue potential, modest ROI, scalabilty
  • What is the competitive advantage potential?
    • Collaboration with others, market entry, community support, team
